2nd Maritime Security Workshop

Multinational Maritime Security Centre of Excellence conducted 2nd Maritime Security Workshop on 7 - 9 October 2013 in Istanbul. The theme of the Workshop was Multinational Approach to Maritime Security.

Maritime security issues on national, regional and global levels were discussed during the Workshop. Maritime security requires multinational, cross-functional and interagency coordination. Therefore a very broad profile of attendees from different disciplines, organizations and geographic regions were invited and we managed to bring together a total of 133 civilian and military attendees from national, international maritime organizations and universities.

The first day of the Workshop was planned as plenary sessions where, various national, regional and international maritime security initiatives were presented and discussed.

The second day was planned to explore the interdisciplinary nature of maritime security with our Academic Advisory Board to continue to draft the MARSEC COE project "Multinational Maritime Security Interagency Doctrine". In the morning period a round table discussion was held with all participants and in the afternoon period three Working Groups were established as part of this study. The contributions of these Working Groups; Legal, Maritime Situational Awareness and Maritime Risks Working Groups are critical for the success of our project.

The third day was planned as Industry Day and 4 Turkish Defence Companies; ASELSAN, HAVELSAN, MILSOFT, Balkan Teknoloji ve Balkan Telekom and METEKSAN, opened booths where they provided information about their projects. Italian Navy also made a live demonstration of the V-RMTC on the third day.

The third day was also the beginning of the Maritime Situational Awareness Workshop, organized by CJOS COE, COE CSW and MARSEC COE which was held at the same venue, 9 - 11 October 2013.

We would like to thank all the participants, who helped us to make the MARSEC COE 2nd Maritime Security Workshop a great success. We are looking forward to continue this cooperation and we believe that as our motto "Working Together for Maritime Security" is the key to tackle the maritime security challenges.
